Many of the UK book blogs I read love certain boutique presses, though until now I d viewed these publishers as a bit too precious The blogs are nice to read because they re usually good natured than, er it s just that I have a misanthopic side too and am hardly ever bothered about fancy editions On actually looking at Peirene Press website for the first time in the run up to the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize I wanted to find out about their recent titles I saw how very well their books su [...]
That was the longest and most exhilarating paragraph I ve ever read The teenage daughter unveils the architecture of her family, warped by her despotic father She packs in all of the excuses, the hardships, the twisted explanations that decorate the miseries of his rule It is psychologically astute, uncannily so It stands on its own for that portrait of the family But then when one considers the author s intention I wrote this book in August 1989, just before the Fall of the Berlin Wall I wanted [...]
It was neither a sign nor a coincidence that we were going to have mussels that eveningwhat we d had in mind when we were planning the mussel feast was pretty insignificant, certainly less important than the immensity and gravity of what actually happenedThis book was published by the UK small press, Peirene Press a boutique publishing house with a traditional commitment to first class European literature in high quality translation and whose style is described by the TLS as Two hour books to be [...]
The family mother, daughter and son sit at the dinner table waiting for the father to join them in sharing a mussel feast While they are waiting the father is expected any minute with good news on his promotion their chatting moves from a casual exchange on the day to something sensitive, personal to the daughter of the house Is it a coincidence that that particular evening the atmosphere is different, the the narrator wonders, is it an omen of things to come Yes, it was slightly unusual, and a [...]
Birgit Vanderbeke s The Mussel Feast is a classic in the author s native Germany, where it was published to critical and popular acclaim in 1990 It won the prestigious German language literature award, the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize, that same year It has recently been translated into English by London based Peirene Press.I loved this book so much, I read it twice when it initially came out in May and then again last weekend It s a tiny package, but reading it is like peeling an onion there are so [...]

Peirene Press are making waves in the publishing industry and, like me, many look forward to the European gems which they publish in English often for the first time every year The Mussel Feast, which is regarded as a modern German classic that has shaped an entire generation , is the first of their offerings for 2013 First published as Das Muschelessen in 1990, The Mussel Feast was Vanderbeke s first novel, and provided the foundation which established her as one of Germany s most successful au [...]
That escalated quickly. The Mussel Feast is written in a claustrophobic, breathless voice that makes it virtually impossible to find any sort of pausing point Bow to the semicolon A family mom, sister, brother sits at the dinner table after preparing a mussel feast for a tyrannical father who never shows up At first the story seems comical, narrated by the snarky, mussel loathing sister and daughter Dad seems merely quirky and grouchy, but as the narrative matures, he is revealed as an abusive, u [...]

This novella, translated from the German, is about a family dinner gone wrong A mother and her two teenage children prepare a mussel feast for their father, the patriarch, who is returning from a business trip Things do not unfold as planned and tensions mount to say would be to spoil the story Birgit Vanderbeke wrote this novella in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, as an examination of how revolutions start, using the format of the family saga. The reading experience is however ma [...]
Four stars for quality and significance, but maybe not so many for entertainment This is an admirable book, memorable and rewarding, but not true to Peirene Press editor s optimistic description of hilarious It is an increasingly dark portrayal of a German family tyrannized by the father which becomes an overt allegory of the oppressive East German dictatorship Written in 1989 it was perfectly timed for the fall of the Berlin Wall, and is the book of that moment of history It has the compressed [...]
I don t know what would have happened if we d been able to eat at six o clock as usual It s astonishing how people react when the routine is disturbed, a tiny delay to the normal schedule and at once everything is different. This novella, which was originally published in 1990 and not translated into English until last year, is set in a home in West Berlin prior to the country s reunification An unnamed woman and her teenaged son and daughter have prepared a feast of moules frites mussels with ch [...]
LE After reading this book in the original version and hearing it as an audiobook with the voice of the author, I can say that my experience is quite complete I liked it as much the second time as well Give this short book marked as story a chance A small number of pages makes a big book I found it very haunting and although 2017 just started , I have the feeling that this powerful read will stick with me for a very long time It reminded me at times of Thomas Bernhard, but I liked it way than I [...]
We are in West Germany, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall The father of the family is expected home from a business trip, with news of a long awaited promotion His dutiful wife has prepared a celebratory dinner the mussel feast of the title It is his favourite dish, but one that his wife, grown up daughter and teenage son do not particularly like The father, a slave to his idea of perfection, is uncharacteristically late As they wait around the table, and the wine flows, the family members [...]
Every novel is out there looking for its ideal reader Birgit Vanderbeke s found it in me Okay my family wasn t exactly like this but it made an uncomfortable read Tolstoy famously begins Anna Karenina, with one of the great opening lines Happy families are all alike every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way but I ve never been entirely convinced by the veracity of that statement there are only so many ways to be unhappy In many respects the family here is a bit of a caricature but perhaps t [...]
A perfect example of the short novel capturing a moment in time, a memory encased An example of how the written word can capture memory in all its glory and gory details An imagined photograph or a painting of a family sat at a table, mother, daughter, son and empty chair, with a steaming pot of mussels in the centre, would evoke but not explain What the mussel feast does is photographically, slow as a slide show, trace a moment from the realisation that the father is not coming home to the awai [...]
It was neither a sign nor a coincidence that we were going to have mussels that evening Yes, it was slightly unusual, and afterwards we sometimes spoke of the mussels as a sign, but they definitely weren t we also said they were a bad omen that s nonsense too Nor were the mussels a coincidence This evening of all evenings, we d say, we decided to eat mussels But it really wasn t like that you couldn t call it a coincidence after the event, of course, we tried to interpret our decision as a sign [...]
The Man of the House has made it to the top The promotion he has obsessed over is finally his All he must do now is return from his business trip, walk into his home, and celebrate with his family, sharing a bottle of Sp tlese wine and a feast of his favorite food mussels. He won t make it home. And as his wife and children await him, a growing picture of the idealist who wanted the perfect family and the top job begins to look and like a monster The resolve of the daughter speaker as well as th [...]
A three paragraph novella that had me captured from the beginning The absent, but oh so present father, was rather too close to comfort for me, but the atmosphere of a family under patriarchy was brilliantly portrayed My poor mother was present here and the tyranny of a household dominated by one man who managed to make everyone else feel inadequate whilst celebrating his own accomplishments was achieved through clever repetitive writing that mirrored the relentlessly of the daily lives of the f [...]
Comprised solely of a monologue, this prize winning German novella follows the evening of a small family as they await the return of the husband father for dinner As they wait, the strict order, uniformity and conformity to which they have previously adhered begins to break down and life will never be the same again.Widely acknowledged to be about the lifting of the iron curtain and written just prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, this novel is apparently a set book in Germany. Some reviewers h [...]
So much feels Very beautifully written but quite sad and even shocking at times The absence of conventional dialogue was not an issue for the unnamed protagonist s narration was so rich, and I was especially touched by the raging undertone to this seemingly calm and accepting way of telling about these horrible things like they were no big deal This was definitely the most interesting and thought provoking book I ve read this year.
A brilliant depiction of a monstrously autocratic, egotistical and violent father think Saddam Hussein or Pol Pot with extraordinary ideas about how a proper family should conduct itself, and who is constantly outraged by his family s inability to conform The story is narrated over the course of one evening in the teenage voice of his daughter humorous, rebellious, sulky, accepting.
But not in German.Short but powerful portrait of a dysfunctional family Published just after the fall of the Berlin Wall it has parallels with the DDR.
I love the publishing idea of the Peirene Press, though
